Chapter Thirteen

“I’m sorry, Cal,” Summer said, hating the whiny tone of her voice. “I know guys hate it when women just stop moving, waiting for the guy to notice and ask what’s wrong. I don’t blame you.”

“So what’s wrong?” Cal asked.

Avoiding his eyes, Summer sat up. “I don’t know.”

Cal stood up. “You screwed Father last night, and now you don’t want me.”

“No, I—“ Summer’s voice sounded weak even to her. “I enjoyed this afternoon with you, Cal. I really did.”

“Sure. Baseball’s always fun to watch. Ballpark food’s always fun to eat. Beer’s always cold and wet.”

The pain in his gray eyes and his harsh voice touched Summer’s heart. But what could she do?

“I keep trying with you, Summer. I really do.”

“I know,” Summer said. She decided not to point out when they were together he always got angry, not her. He did apologize, but it wasn’t like it was her fault they didn’t get along.

Until now.

“All day, I tried not to think about him. About him and you…last night. It’s like trying not to think about a purple elephant, but I tried.”

“I understand, Cal.”

“Do you? Do you really? What’s it’s like to be in your father’s shadow all your life? Even when you’re in bed with a woman your own age?”

“I told you, I never knew my father,” Summer said. “If I met him now I wouldn’t know him. Even my mother wouldn’t, I’m sure.”

“So I’m just too young for you.”

“That’s crazy. I’ve never dated old guys before. With your father, I don’t know how to say this, but it’s…something makes him magnetic. I can’t help it, I can’t control myself.”

“Magnetic,” Cal said, voice full of scorn. “That’s why he’s always covered with nails and iron filings. He gets attached to refrigerators. Family pictures, you know.”

He smelled faintly of her makeup and body lotion.

“First I wanted you. But you threw me into the swimming pool, so I met your father, and things just kept going.”

“I apologized!”

“The point is, that’s why he knows me.”

“So it’s all my fault?”

“Oh, Cal—“

“Guess I’ll get my local news from Channel 4 from now on.”

Cal walked out.

A moment later, the motor of his Acura roared, thundering his rage to all of Brentwood Forest. His tires screeched as he pulled away. Even from within her bedroom, Summer smelled the scorched rubber.

She took another taste of beer. Nothing but sour hops. No happy carbonation.

Lynnette hated her.

Now Cal hated her.

She couldn’t see Clayton again.

What next? Who would hate her next?

Maybe she ought to just throw herself off the Eads Bridge into the Mississippi River.

The next day just before she went to lunch, David called Summer into his office.

“What’s going on?” he asked without any preliminaries.

“What do you mean?” All her stories were coming along. Her work was fine. It was her personal life was in a mess.

“Calwood Solomon called early this morning to cancel all advertising. Refused to give a reason, just—“ David snapped his fingers.

Summer began to feel ill. “I’m sorry, I—“

“An hour later, old Clayton Solomon calls and reinstates the account.
